Virginia Tech's New $1.4M Discovery Lab Offers Undergrads Hands-On Research

Virginia Tech has launched the Discovery Lab, a state-of-the-art facility offering undergraduate students hands-on research experience. The lab, valued at approximately $1.4 million, is guided by associate professors Anne Brown and Rich Helm from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and is open to students across various majors.

Spanning an entire floor, the Discovery Lab bridges academic study with real-world practice. It features two wet labs, a dirty lab for messy experiments, microscopy, data analytics, 3D printing, fabrication, and collaboration areas. Biochemistry students Anushka Jadhav, Varsha Durai, and Paige Roach are leading summer projects and will mentor new researchers this fall.

Faculty emphasize quantitative data generation and analysis to equip students with skills for AI and machine learning workflows. The lab's extensive equipment includes high-end microscopes, 3D printers, and data analytics tools. It aims to foster industry-facing projects, providing students with practical experience before they graduate.

The Discovery Lab at Virginia Tech offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to engage in hands-on research. With its comprehensive facilities and experienced guidance, the lab prepares students for the future of science and technology, while also fostering innovation and collaboration.
