"Unity Across Africa: Embracing Variety and Diversity!"
In the heart of Refrath, the creative school Bergisch Gladbach played host to a unique and enlightening event last Friday. Dubbed "Africa Connects - Celebrate Diversity!", the action day aimed to present a new, differentiated view of Africa's rich cultural breadth.
Organised by the Krea youth club, Intercultural meeting point Paula, and Quartier management LOKI, the day was attended by around 75 people of various age groups and cultural backgrounds. The event was part of the solidarity weeks for the International Day against Racism, making it a significant contribution to promoting understanding and acceptance.
The day was filled with a series of workshops and activities. The "Diversity of Africa" workshop challenged the one-sided image of Africa as a crisis continent, instead presenting a new, differentiated view of its cultural breadth. On the other hand, the "Afro Dance" workshop demonstrated that music and dance are universal languages, encouraging participation and fostering a sense of unity.
A shared meal offered culinary specialties from various African countries, providing a taste of the continent's diverse flavours. The day culminated in a musical live performance by Jamie, a young musician from the Krea youth club.
Sigrid Brenner, the director of the creative school and the Krea youth club, expressed her gratitude to the lecturers, catering staff, and guests for their commitment. She was pleased with the positive feedback and expressed hope for a repeat of the event next year.
