Turtles Incorporating Garlic in Their Diet Discover New Living Environment
The city of Hamm is celebrating a significant milestone in its efforts to increase biodiversity, as the common toad has made a successful return to its natural habitats in the Lippe water bodies. The comeback of the critically endangered amphibian species in NRW is a testament to the success of various conservation projects, which have been ongoing for several years. The Biological Station Soest, in collaboration with regional authorities, has played a pivotal role in these efforts. The Lippeaue Experience Area, a 195-hectare expanse that stretches approximately 5 kilometers along the Lippe River, has been instrumental in providing new habitats for the common toad. This project, initiated by the Lippe Association in collaboration with the city of Hamm, was officially opened in June 2023 with a grand family celebration. The Lippeaue Experience Area, located at Gustav-Heinemann-Straße 105, Hamm, has seen the successful implementation of renaturation measures and the ecological development of the Lippe floodplain. This has created numerous new habitats for a variety of animal and plant species, with the common toad joining the growing list that now includes beavers, white storks, and meadow saffron. Young common toads were raised in a specially equipped breeding station of the NABU Nature Conservation Station Münsterland and released into the new water bodies created in the Lippeaue Experience Area. The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Water Framework Directive of the state of NRW, with additional support from the regional government of Arnsberg. NRW Minister of the Environment Oliver Krischer attended the official opening of the Lippeaue Experience Area, underscoring the importance of such initiatives in preserving and enhancing biodiversity. Despite the lack of specific details about the leaders of the Biological Station Soest involved in the project, their work has been crucial in the reintroduction of the common toad in the Hammer Lippeau. The common toad once had a stronghold near Lippstadt in the neighboring district of Soest, and the conservation activities of the Biological Station Soest have been instrumental in promoting the species' recovery. The successful reintroduction of the common toad in Hamm is a significant step towards preserving biodiversity and ensuring the survival of this critically endangered species in NRW. The city and its partners remain committed to continuing their efforts to create and maintain suitable habitats for the common toad and other species in the Lippe water bodies.
