Transitioning Healthcare Facility into a Primary Education Institution
In the picturesque Markgräflerland region, a historic transformation is underway. The former eye clinic on St. Jürgen Street, once a bustling medical facility, is now being transformed into a modern primary school for children.
This school, a model project under historic protection, is a testament to the blend of the old and the new. The original red brick facade, historic staircases, and large windows have been preserved, while the interior has been beautifully renovated by Vier Quartier GmbH, a company led by Rolf Specht, one of its four partners.
The new school spans a four-story building, covering a 5,880 square meter area. The contemporary design includes "open-space" corridors, a cafeteria with a dining room on the ground floor, and a hands-on kitchen on the 3rd floor for practical nutrition education.
The school's unique learning environment is further enhanced by its modern amenities. The lighting system adjusts to the current daylight conditions, ensuring a natural and energy-efficient environment. A modern ventilation system has been installed to ensure a healthy indoor climate, and the school is connected to the district heating network for efficient heating.
Rolf Specht has praised the school, calling it wonderful. The school is designed for primary school children and will house eight classes, each with 24 students, on two floors. The conversion work began in May 2023, and the school is set to open its doors to students soon.
This transformation of a long-abandoned eye clinic into a modern primary school is a shining example of preserving history while embracing the future. The school's innovative design and commitment to providing a healthy and sustainable learning environment are sure to inspire generations of students.
