Google Introduces AI-Powered Voice Reading Feature for Google Docs

Google has recently rolled out a new feature for its AI, Gemini, which allows users to have their Google Docs files read aloud to them. This new development is a significant step forward in the realm of remote work and productivity.

With this feature, document editors can place an audio button anywhere in their files for viewers to listen as needed. A pill-shaped player will appear, displaying the duration of the document. The player offers play and pause options, as well as playback speed controls, allowing users to control the pace of the reading.

This voice reading feature could make working through information more efficient than reading it oneself. It enables users to perform two tasks simultaneously, such as reading a Google Doc and driving, commuting, or running.

The AI can read aloud Google Docs content in various voices, including Narrator, Educator, Teacher, Persuader, Explainer, Coach, or Motivator. Users can choose the voice that best suits their preference.

To enable the Gemini feature for reading Google Docs files aloud in a browser, you need to access the new Audio option under the Tools menu in Google Docs on the web. Simply select Listen to this tab to have the document read aloud using Gemini’s AI-created natural voices.

It's important to note that this feature is currently available only to specific subscribers of Google Workspace or Google AI plans. Eligible subscribers include Google AI Pro or Ultra, Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Gemini Education and Education Premium add-on, and Gemini Business or Gemini Enterprise add-on subscribers.

The feature is currently available only in English and requires the web interface of Google Docs. Google's aim with this new feature is to enhance accessibility and productivity by allowing users to listen to documents instead of only reading them.

This new development is part of Google's ongoing efforts to improve its AI capabilities and make technology more user-friendly. The feature was first spotted by 9to5google.

This voice reading feature could potentially benefit a wide range of users, including professionals, students, and anyone who needs to work on the go. It's a prime example of how AI technology can be used to improve productivity and make tasks more convenient for users.
