Team from Romania clinches victory at 2025 Balkan Mathematical Competition
Romania Tops at 2025 Balkan Math Olympiad
Romania snatched the top spot at the 2025 Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO), held in the sunny Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from April 25 to 30. And boy, did they make it count! Over four intense days, Romanian students garnered a whopping four gold medals and two silver medals, earning them a resounding 198 points in total. The Ministry of Education proudly announced the triumph.
Gold medals were bestowed upon Emanuel Mazăre from Alexandru Odobescu National College in Pitești, Radu Stoleriu from Emil Racoviță National College in Iași, top dog Pavel Ciurea, and Andrei Vila, both from the International Computer Science High School in Bucharest. Medals of silver went to Alexandru Ciobotea and David Ghibu—also from the International Computer Science High School in the capital.
The 42nd edition of the BMO brought together academic badasses from 11 member countries such as Albania, Greece, and Turkey, alongside invited teams from countries like the UK, France, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia.
The Romanian squad was expertly steered by Associate Professor Cătălin Gherghe, from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest, and Deputy Leader Ovidiu Sontea, from Tudor Vianu National College in Bucharest.
