Students' Survey Reveals Insights on Mandatory Volunteer Work in Halton Region

Students in the Halton Region have been conducting a survey on their peers' experiences with the mandatory 40-hour volunteer community work for graduation. Funded by the Burlington Foundation, the project is slated to complete in February 2026, with a midterm report presented in July 2025.

The survey, designed by the students themselves, gathered data on how students balanced their personal lives with their local volunteering. As of the midterm report, 225 surveys had been completed. The students presented their findings confidently and handled follow-up questions with ease. The project is a collaboration with data:viz:lab, a pilot project developed with partners including the Anna-Seghers-Bibliothek and the Network for Digital Child and Youth Participation. However, concerns were raised about personal privacy with the use of postal codes for data collection.

Community Development Halton (CDH), a not-for-profit organisation operating for over 40 years, supports this initiative. Known as an 'unrecognized gem' in Burlington, CDH operates a volunteer portal and focuses on community planning. The survey's findings will provide valuable insights into students' local volunteering experiences, helping to shape future community engagement initiatives.
