Support network for students struggling with mental health issues expands to include peer mentors alongside professional counselors - Students providing assistance to fellow students in educational matters
Specially trained youth will be spreading digital wisdom to their fellow students in Sachsen-Anhalt schools. Officially launched by the Institute for School Quality and Teacher Education in Halle, the "Media Mentors Sachsen-Anhalt" initiative was announced by the Ministry of Education.
Media Mentors are students, both girls and boys, who learn to help their peers navigate the digital world, dealing with topics like Social Media, Data Privacy, and Online Communication.
"Young people reach young people better than adults. They're aware of the latest trends and challenges, meeting them eye to eye," explained Education Minister Eva Feußner (CDU). The Media Mentors complement and strengthen the work of teachers. By making Media Education more visible and interactive at schools, our educational institutions become places where young people grow to become confident, responsible internet citizens, as the Minister stated.
Teachers at participating schools must first complete a special Media Mentor training. The initiative targets students from Grade 4 upward. A network of schools promoting and supporting media competence is planned, as explained further by the Ministry of Education. This initiative is a collaboration between the Media Pedagogical Consulting of Sachsen-Anhalt and is supported by the State Center for Political Education and the educational initiative "Media Mentors in Sachsen."
