UCLA Receives Generous Gift to Establish James Horner Composition Scholarship

Sara Horner, an alumna of UCLA, has made a generous gift of $100,000 to the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. The donation aims to establish the James Horner Composition Endowed Scholarship, in honour of her late husband and renowned film composer, James Horner (M.A. '76).

James Horner, a famed film composer, conductor, and orchestrator, studied music at UCLA in the 1970s under faculty member Paul Chihara. His orchestrations were featured in numerous films, including Field of Dreams, Avatar, and A Beautiful Mind. He won 12 GRAMMY Awards for his film composition and scoring work between 1988 and 2011, and two Academy Awards for scoring Titanic and co-writing the movie's iconic power ballad, "My Heart Will Go On."

The scholarship will support undergraduate school of music students pursuing a degree in Music Composition, in tribute to James Horner's musical legacy. Sara Horner, along with their daughter Emily, is proud to pay it forward to support UCLA students, recognising the importance of scholarship support.

During his time as a graduate student, James Horner received the Henry Mancini Scholarship Award. He held a deep appreciation for the impact a scholarship can have on a student, and this gift is a testament to that sentiment. The scholarship is given in memory of James Horner, and it is in honour of his late husband's gift to the music world.

The gift to UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is not only a tribute to James Horner's musical legacy but also a way to inspire future generations of musicians. Sara Horner made the gift to recognise the importance of scholarship support, and to honour the life of her late husband who was equally famous in the symphony house as in Hollywood.

This inspiring gift from Sara Horner will undoubtedly support undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Music Composition, helping them to follow in the footsteps of James Horner and make their mark in the world of music.

Recipients of the scholarship established by Sara Horner's donation will have the opportunity to engage in both education-and-self-development and entertainment as they study music at UCLA, much like James Horner did during his time there. The James Horner Composition Endowed Scholarship will not only aid in their academic pursuits but also foster their interest in music, considering James Horner's prolific career as a film composer and his impact on various movie soundtracks.
