Saudi Woman's Memoir 'No Tears for Allah' Exposes Plight of Women in Islamic World
Kholoud Bariedah, a Saudi Arabian woman, gained international attention after being sentenced to four years in prison and 2000 lashes for attending a mixed-gender party. Her memoir, 'No Tears for Allah', recounts her experiences and advocates for women's rights in the Islamic world.
Initially sentenced to four years and 2000 lashes, Bariedah's sentence was reduced due to her memorization of the entire Quran. She served one and a half years and received 600 lashes before being released. Her time in prison, including a period in solitary confinement, left her questioning her faith and the treatment of women in her country. After her release, Bariedah publicly declared her atheism on Facebook in 2014, becoming the first Saudi woman to do so. Unable to return to her homeland, she found a new home in Berlin.
Bariedah's book, 'No Tears for Allah', serves as a powerful testament to her experiences and a call for women's rights in the Islamic world. Despite the risks, she continues to advocate for change, living in exile in Berlin.
