Russia's airbase reportedly hit by Ukraine as they deployed hundreds of drones within Ukrainian territory.

In a significant development on July 5, 2025, Ukraine's military forces successfully attacked the Borisoglebsk airbase in Russia’s Voronezh region, dealing a significant blow to Russian military assets stationed there. This base, described as the "home base" for Russia’s advanced fighter jets, including Su-34, Su-35S, and Su-30SM models, reportedly sustained damage to a depot containing guided aerial bombs, a training aircraft, and possibly other military aircraft[1][2][3][4][5].

The attack comes amidst a series of escalations in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. In response, Russia has intensified its bombing and drone campaign against Ukraine, firing 322 drones and decoys overnight into Ukraine, targeting mainly the Khmelnytskyi region. Ukraine’s air force shot down 157 drones and lost track of 135, likely due to electronic jamming. Despite the heavy drone assault, Ukraine reported no casualties or damage in the main targeted area[1][2].

Meanwhile, Russia claimed to have shot down 94 Ukrainian drones during the same period with no reported casualties from their side either[1][2]. This exchange reflects a continued escalation where Ukraine demonstrates its capability to strike high-value targets deep inside Russian territory, while Russia maintains heavy drone and missile strikes to pressure Ukraine. The ongoing conflict shows no signs of immediate de-escalation, with both sides sustaining active offensives[1][2].

The escalation was also marked by a large-scale aerial assault on Kyiv overnight into Friday, one of the largest attacks since the start of the invasion. No damage, injuries, or deaths were reported in the Khmelnytskyi region as of Saturday[6]. However, the number of people killed in the assault increased to two, and 26 were wounded[7].

Against this backdrop, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a "very important and productive" phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday. During the call, the two leaders discussed strengthening Ukrainian air defenses, potential joint weapons production between the U.S. and Ukraine, and broader U.S.-led efforts to end the war with Russia[8]. Trump stated that the call was "very good," but did not commit to finding a way to end the fighting, saying "I don't know. I can't tell you whether or not that's going to happen."

In response to the conflict, the U.S. has paused some shipments of military aid to Ukraine, including crucial air defense missiles. Zelenskyy plans to build up Ukraine's domestic arms industry, but scaling up will take time[8]. Russia's officials did not immediately comment on the attack.
