The Rotary Club of Accra-SpeakMasters Kickstarts a Fundraising Campaign

Last week, the Rotary Club of Accra-SpeakMasters organized a walk to bootstrap a campaign aimed at supporting the development of basic education and literacy within the Otano community, a bustling settlement in Adentan Municipality, Accra.

Club members embarked on a 7.5-kilometer trek at the Achimota School Oval, creating awareness about the importance of education. The funds collected during the walk will be channeled towards building a kindergarten classroom and library block for the Otano Bethel Presbyterian Basic School.

Upon examining the Otano Community, the Club found that the KG1 pupils don't have their own classroom and must attend classes in a corner of a junior high school classroom, situated about 500 meters away from the primary school compound. Additionally, the school lacks an adequate library facility, with a container meant for this purpose being a small, mobile unit with no books.

Following the walk, club members engaged in interactions with school authorities, locals from the Otano community, officials from the Adentan Municipal Assembly, and representatives from the Ghana Education Service.

Rotarian Debbie Mangortey, the Club’s president-elect, expressed optimism about the project, stating, "We firmly believe that this project will make schooling a delightful experience for young children in this community."

The president-elect further emphasized that Rotary members worldwide dedicate their time, energy, and commitment to carrying out essential and sustainable projects that promote peace, combat diseases, provide clean water, support education, and foster economic growth. She warmly invited all passionate individuals to join the Club in making a difference.

Dave Osei-Amankwah, the District Governor-elect, also encouraged alumni from the old Achimota School to collaborate with the Rotary Club in giving to the needy community.

Those wishing to support the project are encouraged to reach out to the Rotary Club of Accra-SpeakMasters at or contact Rotarian Betty Blankson at 0244313660 for collaboration proposals.

Key figures present during the ceremony included Madam Vivian Owusu, headteacher of the school, Madam Charlotte Asare Nyarko, Deputy Director of the Ghana Education Service for Monitoring and Supervision, and the Rev. Emmanuel Sowah, Presiding Elder of the Bethel Presbyterian Church, Otano.

Since its inception two years ago, the Rotary Club of Accra-SpeakMasters has contributed to diverse communities in and around Accra through various services. Recent endeavors include donating menstrual cups to St. Peter's Catholic Basic School in Englesie Amanfrom, providing a Polytank to the JoyKol Ophanage in Gomoa Fete, collaborating with the Rotary Alumini to offer educational supplies to children at the Gomoa Kakraba Ophanage, and partnering with other Rotary and Lion Clubs for the Amedzope Health Screening and blood donation Project.
