The Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships have been a cornerstone of support for students and doctoral candidates since 1990, initially offering 22 scholarships for international students. Today, the Foundation supports over 1500 students and doctoral candidates, providing more than financial aid; it offers a platform for young achievers to develop their skills, network, and make a difference.

Jan Philipp Albrecht, the CEO and an alumnus of the program, recalls how the scholarship allowed him to continue his voluntary work alongside his studies without financial strain, and it opened up a broad horizon through contact with committed scholarship holders and their diverse perspectives.

The Foundation particularly supports underrepresented groups, including women in STEM fields, first-generation academics, people with migration backgrounds, People of Color, and refugees. This commitment to diversity reflects the Foundation's belief in the importance of promoting democracy and advocating for more educational equity.

Scholarship holders benefit from an extensive program of up to 500 individual events per year, including summer academies, seminars, educational trips, conferences, workshops, and self-organized working groups. The program is supported by 34 employees, ensuring that each scholar receives the personal attention they need to thrive.

As the new semester begins, 180 more young people will be studying or pursuing doctorates with a scholarship from the Heinrich Böll Foundation. Each year, the Foundation receives approximately 2000 applications, making the competition for the scholarships fierce.

The impact of the Heinrich Böll Foundation's scholarship program extends far beyond the academic world. Over 5500 alumni of the Foundation are working worldwide for democracy and human rights, environmental protection and climate change, gender equality, and the rights of minorities. This global network of committed individuals is a testament to the Foundation's success in nurturing the next generation of leaders.

In conclusion, the Heinrich Böll Foundation's scholarships are a valuable contribution to promoting democracy and advocating for more diversity and greater educational equity. The new semester marks another opportunity for talented young people to join this esteemed community and make a difference in the world.
