Readiness and Resilience Explained: Key Insights for Preparation
In a timely and poignant event, the Love to Nippon Project hosted the webinar "Be Prepared! Lessons Learned on Readiness and Resilience" on February 23, 2021. The event, which marked the Ten-Year Anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquakes and Tsunami, was moderated by award-winning news anchor David Ono of ABC7.
The panel of experts and a disaster survivor shared insights on preparedness, survival, and recovery during natural disasters. The webinar was emceed by Yuko Kaifu, President of Los Angeles, and co-hosted by Daryl L. Osby, Fire Chief of Los Angeles County Fire Department, Dr. Lucy Jones, Kevin McGowan, Director of Office of Emergency Management, County of Los Angeles, Larry Collins, Deputy Chief, Special Operations, Fire & Rescue, California Governor's Office of Emergency Services, Hon. Kimiaki Toda, Mayor of the City of Ofunato, Iwate, Japan, and Masako Unoura, Founder of Love to Nippon Project.
The County of Los Angeles was recently ranked by FEMA as the riskiest county in the United States for natural disasters. The webinar covered key tactics to take before, during, and after a disaster to survive it.
Preparedness
The panel emphasized the importance of identifying potential hazards, creating a family communications plan, assembling emergency supply kits, developing an evacuation plan, and data protection and backup for businesses.
Survival
During a disaster, it is crucial to stay informed, protect your home or business, prepare for power outages, and support health needs.
Recovery
After a disaster, it is essential to assess damage, rebuild and restore, access resources, and support mental health.
The webinar included presentations from top experts in the field of natural disasters, and attendees heard a first-hand account of surviving a catastrophic 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami. The recording of the webinar is available on the official Los Angeles YouTube Channel.
