Rare gathering of Eckhart's works found in Leipzig's library
Discovery of Previously Unknown Text by Meister Eckhart Unearthed
A groundbreaking discovery has been made by a team of scholars at the Manuscript Center, who have successfully deciphered the notes on two narrow parchment strips believed to be remnants of the oldest known manuscript containing a text by the renowned medieval theologian, Meister Eckhart.
The manuscript, written around 1300 in Thuringia, was penned at the Dominican monastery in Erfurt where Meister Eckhart was active during that time. The existence of the parchment strips has been known for some time, but their true significance remained a mystery until now.
The deciphered text on the parchment strips is written in Middle High German and is believed to contain previously unknown text by Meister Eckhart. The text is expected to provide new insights into his philosophy and theology, particularly focusing on the nature of God and the soul, as well as the 'stillness of the soul.'
The research group, known as the 'Tatian work group' (Arbeitsgruppe Tatian), is currently translating and analyzing the deciphered text. The scientists at Leipzig University Library, who are carefully preserving and studying the fragments, consider these findings to be of great importance.
The deciphered text on the parchment strips is believed to be a previously unidentified sermon by Meister Eckhart. However, it is also believed to be incomplete, with some parts missing. Despite this, the discovery is expected to offer valuable insights into the thoughts and teachings of one of the most influential figures in medieval theology.
The library considers these fragments to be from a medieval book, adding to the significance of the discovery. As the scholars continue their work, the world eagerly awaits the revelations that the deciphered text on the parchment strips will bring.
