PremieRpet Steps Up for Jaguars, Connecting Pet Owners to Conservation

Jaguars, the largest and most powerful big cats in the Americas, are in need of protection. Their habitats are under threat due to human settlement expansion, leading to a 'near threatened' status on the IUCN Red List. Meanwhile, pet food companies like PremieRpet are stepping up to support wildlife conservation efforts, connecting with pet owners' love for animals and promoting sustainability.

Jaguars play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity. As an umbrella species, their habitats, when preserved, protect entire ecosystems. Unfortunately, these habitats are being lost at an alarming rate due to human settlement expansion. PremieRpet, a Brazilian dog and cat food company, has taken a stand to safeguard these habitats as part of its sustainability initiatives.

In 2024, PremieRpet sponsored the Jaguar Parade, featuring jaguar statues in Rio de Janeiro and Paris. This event raised awareness and funds for jaguar conservation. However, the specific NGOs that benefited from the auction of these statues at the Paris Olympic Games remain unknown.

Charismatic animals like the pika can influence people to care more about ecological issues. Despite their appeal, pika populations are declining due to climate change, making them a poignant poster-species for its effects on wildlife. Allison Reser, director of sustainability and innovation for the Pet Sustainability Coalition, used the pika as a symbol for climate change at the Forum Essentials 2025.

PremieRpet's support for jaguar conservation is a step in the right direction. By connecting with pet owners' love for animals and supporting wildlife conservation, the company is not only promoting sustainability but also legitimizing its own sustainability goals. However, more transparency is needed regarding the beneficiaries of conservation efforts. As climate change continues to impact wildlife, it's crucial for pet food companies to step up and support conservation efforts, using charismatic species like the pika to raise awareness.
