Podcast 'Mauerecho' Highlights Second-Gen Immigrants' Success and Challenges in Germany

Ebru Tasdemir and Angelika Nguyen, hosts of the podcast 'Mauerecho - East Meets West', discuss the experiences of the second generation of immigrants in Germany. They highlight the academic success of this generation but also the challenges they face in full recognition of their contributions to German society.

Tasdemir and Nguyen, both daughters of migrant workers, emphasize that the first generation fought for better living conditions for their children. However, the second generation, born around the time of reunification, has faced challenges in fully acknowledging their role in German society. Despite their academic success, they often earn less, reflecting these challenges.

Dennis Chiponda, son of contract workers, feels their history has been overlooked in the unity discourse. Tasdemir observed concerns about the term 'Volk' among her community in West Berlin during reunification, while Nguyen felt isolated due to experiences with discrimination and everyday racism in East Berlin. Both hosts agree that the contributions of contract and guest workers to reunification are under-recognized.

The podcast 'Mauerecho - East Meets West', produced by the Panter Foundation, aims to shed light on these experiences and foster dialogue. Nguyen believes that migrant backgrounds instill a readiness to fight and engage in society. The next episode will discuss classism instead of parenting and education, correcting a previous announcement.
