Personal Account within CHARA: Insights Gained as a Member
Mike O'Brien '23, the Chief Sports Editor, has penned an exciting article titled "Taylor Hall, Bruins Surge Into Playoffs". The piece discusses the Boston Bruins' recent victory over the New Jersey Devils, a win that clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the team.
Meanwhile, on the campus of Holy Cross, David Mahaffey '92, a Board Member of CHARA (College of the Holy Cross Anti-Racism Alliance), will be joining other board members on February 18 for relevant discussions in Hogan (4th floor). CHARA encourages introspection and self-examination, particularly for white individuals, and aims to promote racial justice and equity within the campus community.
The article's featured image is courtesy of David Mahaffey '92, who also acknowledges his own racism, which he describes as uncaring silence. Interestingly, he was unaware of any racism or racial unrest at Holy Cross until a fight occurred at the fieldhouse in April 1992, possibly due to the Rodney King verdict.
In the world of sports, the Bruins are currently two games into the 2018-2019 NHL regular season. However, the team had an embarrassing 8-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on April 11th. Yet, it was a different game that clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Bruins, a victory over the New Jersey Devils on a specific date.
In a separate article, Allyson Noenickx, the Editor-in-Chief, discusses the 2018-2019 NHL season for the Boston Bruins in "Bruins Season Preview: What to Look For on the Ice".
Students, staff, and faculty are welcome to participate in CHARA discussions, regardless of membership status. If you wish to learn more about CHARA or get involved, you can contact them at [email protected] or visit their website at www.chara1843.com.
Lastly, the Boston Bruins named Brad Marchand the 27th captain in their franchise's history. As the Bruins continue their journey in the NHL, CHARA continues its journey towards promoting racial justice and equity at Holy Cross.
