Overcrowding at Mandaue City College as student count reaches a high of 2,700, causing issues with insufficient classrooms and seats.
Mandaue City College Tackles Classroom Shortage with Temporary Solutions
Mandaue City College (MCC) is addressing its classroom shortage by implementing temporary canopy-type classrooms as an interim solution, with these canopies expected to be operational by August 2025. This temporary setup replaces the previous tents to provide a more comfortable learning environment, thanks to support from the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and local business groups.
The construction of these temporary classrooms is in response to the surge in student population at MCC. With a record enrollment of 2,700 students in 2025, the college is facing overcrowding issues that have been intensified by the increase. Certain classrooms at MCC are so cramped that they resemble container vans, and heat builds up quickly, making it uncomfortable for students.
To improve ventilation in these cramped classrooms, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry has donated electric fans and insulation materials. These donations will help create a more conducive learning environment for the students.
For the long-term infrastructure plan, MCC aims to construct a new college building by the first quarter of 2026 to resolve space congestion permanently. Local government and education officials, including Education Secretary Sonny Angara, have pledged support for the construction of more classrooms and expanding school facilities in Mandaue City to accommodate the growing student population.
Mayor Thadeo "Jonkie" Ouano, the city's leader, aims to improve conditions in certain classrooms at MCC so students can focus better on their lessons. These temporary classrooms are expected to be operational within the month, and Mayor Ouano hopes they will make the students' learning environment more comfortable.
