One Big Beautiful Bill Act Signed, Sparking Concerns Over Poverty, Hunger, and Healthcare

The 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' has been signed into law, sparking concerns about its potential impact on poverty, hunger, and healthcare in the US. The bill includes substantial cuts to safety net programs, with Medicaid and SNAP facing significant reductions.

The bill proposes cuts of $930 billion to Medicaid, which covers 71.4 million Americans, and $285 billion to SNAP, affecting nearly 40 million people. This includes 16 million children, 8 million seniors, and 4 million disabled adults. The cuts could lead to 7.8 million people becoming uninsured by 2034 due to new federal work rules and eligibility changes.

The USCCB has advised Catholics to judge the bill's outcomes based on how it affects the most vulnerable. Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio warned that the bill will harm those who are especially vulnerable, citing cuts to healthcare, food assistance, and environmental programs. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul USA echoed these concerns, predicting a 'staggering impact on the poor'.

Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the bill, stating it includes cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, nutritional assistance, and other programs benefiting vulnerable Americans. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson defended the bill, predicting it would boost wages, household income, job participation, and unemployment rates, and serve as 'jet fuel for the economy'.

The 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' has raised concerns about its impact on poverty, hunger, and healthcare in the US. With significant cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, millions of Americans could be affected. While some predict economic growth, others warn of increased hardship for the most vulnerable. Organizations like Medicaid and SNAP are expected to cover some gaps caused by the bill's compensations.
