New Head for the Americas at the International Monetary Fund Announced

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced Nigel Chalk as the new head for the Americas region, effective October 27, 2025. This appointment was made by the Managing Director of the IMF, Kristalina Georgieva.

Nigel Chalk, a British and Irish national, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics and Ph.D. and master's degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Chalk has been the deputy director of the Western Hemisphere Department at the IMF since 2014 and has served as Acting Director and Mission Chief for the United States.

Before his appointment, the Americas Department of the IMF was led by Alejandro Werner. Nigel Chalk is replacing Rodrigo Valdez, who will now head the Fiscal Affairs Department at the IMF.

Kristalina Georgieva expressed her delight at Chalk's appointment, stating that he will bring his qualities to the role of Director. She approved of his new role, expressing her confidence in his deep experience, sound judgment, and steady hand. Chalk has published numerous works on fiscal and monetary policy and financial reform.

During his tenure, Chalk led 11 consecutive Article IV consultations across four different administrations in the US. He has also been a professor at the University of California and Rutgers University.

In his new role, Chalk will oversee surveillance and loan operations for key economies such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, and Suriname. The transition will start on October 27, 2025, and Chalk will officially start his duties at the IMF on the same day.

Meanwhile, workers at Embraer, a Brazilian aerospace company, have initiated an indefinite strike demanding wage improvements. The strike could have significant implications for the Brazilian economy and the global aerospace industry.

The appointment of Nigel Chalk comes at a crucial time for the IMF, as the global economy continues to navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Chalk's extensive experience and expertise will undoubtedly be valuable in steering the IMF's efforts to support economic recovery and stability in the Americas region.
