New Study Reveals Disconnect in U.S. Student Engagement Perceptions
A recent study, 'Education Insights 2025-2026: Fueling Learning Through Engagement', has shed light on the perception of student engagement in the U.S. The report, conducted by Hanover Research on behalf of Discovery Education, surveyed over 1,300 superintendents, teachers, parents, and students nationwide. The findings highlight a disconnect between students' and educators' views on engagement. The study found that 93% of educators and 99% of superintendents consider student engagement a critical metric and top predictor of success, respectively. However, only 63% of students agreed they were highly engaged, compared to 45% of teachers and 51% of principals. Students also believe AI could aid learning, with 66% expressing this view, but fewer teachers, 44%, use AI for tasks. Discovery Education, which offers digital resources and professional learning solutions, will host a webinar on October 8 at 2:00 PM ET to discuss the report's findings. The webinar aims to bridge the gap between students' and educators' perceptions of engagement. Teachers rated asking thoughtful questions as the strongest indicator of engagement (72%), while superintendents favoured assessment performance (54%). Notably, only 60% of teachers reported having systems to measure engagement, with a lack of clear definitions being a significant challenge. The 'Education Insights 2025-2026' report underscores the need for better understanding and measurement of student engagement. With educators and students holding differing views, open dialogue and shared definitions are crucial. Discovery Education's upcoming webinar offers an opportunity to delve into these insights and foster a more engaged learning environment nationwide.
