New COVID-19 Variant Stratus (XFG) Surges Globally, Now Predominant in Many Countries
A new COVID-19 variant, Stratus (XFG), is causing concern as it surges across the country. First detected in Southeast Asia in January 2025, Stratus has since spread to 38 countries, with cases currently elevated in nine US states. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists it as a 'variant under monitoring' and assesses the global risk level as low despite rising cases.
Stratus is now the predominant strain, accounting for 78% of cases in the country. It is spreading rapidly, leading to increased infections and hospitalizations in Italy and Austria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) monitors the virus through wastewater testing, which detects its spread quicker than clinical testing.
The CDC recommends those who test positive for COVID-19 to stay home and isolate from others. If experiencing emergency warning signs such as trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, or confusion, seek immediate medical help.
While the WHO maintains a low global risk level for Stratus, its rapid spread and predominance in many countries warrant close monitoring. Public health officials urge vigilance, adherence to safety measures, and timely medical intervention when necessary.
