Navigating Research Impasses: Strategies for Overcoming Roadblocks in Your Studies

In the world of art history, still lifes have often been overlooked, with scholars traditionally avoiding their interpretation due to a perceived lack of depth compared to historical, religious, or portrait paintings. However, a shift in perspective is underway, as one art historian sets out to explore the reasons behind this avoidance and uncover the hidden depths of still lifes.

The author, inspired by a roadblock in their research for an R3 essay, found themselves questioning the established norms of interpreting modern still lifes using symbols and traditions from realistic still lifes. This led them to delve deeper into the reasons why art historians have shied away from interpreting still lifes.

The traditional avoidance of interpretation in still lifes can be traced back to their historical categorization as lesser art forms, lacking narrative depth. However, innovative curation, such as the Kimbell Art Museum’s exhibition of Still Life with Melon, Watermelon and Other Fruits, has challenged this perception. This early Italian still life from the circle of Caravaggio reframes the genre, celebrating the natural, imperfect qualities and abundance of the real fruits, inviting a more nuanced appreciation of still lifes as an exaltation of the natural world.

The author's journey took an unexpected turn when they approached the curator of an exhibit they had picked their painting from, hoping for insights into still lifes. However, the curator, too, focused on formal elements such as compositional balance, technique, color, and style due to interpretive concerns.

The problem is not that art historians do not want to interpret still lifes; rather, there is a lack of a method that addresses their concerns about over-interpretation. By studying the reasons behind art historians' reluctance to interpret still lifes, the author was able to develop a method for interpreting overlooked works of art.

This new approach to still lifes offers a fresh perspective, encouraging art historians and audiences to reconsider the genre, shifting from purely symbolic readings to ones that value realism, sensory engagement, and the artists’ subtle commentary on nature and perception. Research can be both exciting and frustrating, especially when progress seems elusive. But hitting tough obstacles in research does not necessarily indicate that the research is wrong or unworthy. Instead, it can push researchers forward, leading to new discoveries and a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

In the spirit of the holiday season, the author offers guidance on reorienting research goals during this time. Hitting a roadblock in research might mean that there is a different question, hidden in the topic, that needs to be explored first. So, whether you're a student writing an essay or a researcher delving into a complex topic, remember that research is a flexible process, and one must follow where the evidence takes them.
