Music School Pupil Secures Marshall Scholarship Victory
UCLA Student Herman Chavez Named 2022 Marshall Scholar
Herman Chavez, a UCLA student, has been awarded the prestigious Marshall Scholarship. This scholarship, one of the most coveted for American college students, is known for its focus on service, ambassadorial potential, and the fostering of enduring relationships between peoples.
Chavez's acceptance into the programme is a testament to his academic merit, leadership, and ambition. His accomplishments bring great honor to The Herb Alpert School of Music, the Humanities Division, and to UCLA.
Transferring to UCLA created opportunities for Chavez that would otherwise have been unachievable. He credits his acceptance as a Marshall Scholar to his experiences as a transfer student at UCLA.
As a Marshall Scholar, Chavez will study for an MSc in Global Affairs and an MMus in Musicology at King's College London. He has received guidance from thesis advisors Cesar Favila (UCLA Musicology), Katherine In-Young Lee (UCLA Musicology), and Tamara Levitz (UCLA Musicology/Comparative Literature).
Chavez's future aspirations include obtaining a Ph.D. in Musicology and becoming a professor of music at a public institution. However, specific details about his aspirations after being named a 2022 Marshall Scholar could not be found in the current data.
In October, Chavez was named an NISTS (National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students) 2022 Transfer Student Ambassador. His scholarship advisor is Rebecca Blustein.
The Marshall Scholarship selects about 40 American students each year based on academic merit, leadership, and ambassadorial potential. The scholarship includes all costs of pursuing a two-year degree at a British university. Donors like Elaine Krown Klein have ensured that financial need is not an insurmountable barrier to a superior education at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
The late Elaine Krown Klein was a long-time supporter of the arts at UCLA, providing philanthropy for over three decades. As an Elaine Krown Klein Fine Arts Scholar at UCLA, Chavez is part of a legacy that continues to support and nurture artistic talent at the university.
The acceptance rate for a Marshall Scholarship is only 4%, making Chavez's achievement all the more impressive. With his passion for musicology, global affairs, and service, he is poised to make significant contributions in his field and beyond.
Pursuing his passion for musicology and global affairs at King's College London, Herman Chavez plans to leverage his education-and-self-development and career-development opportunities, furthering his personal-growth and ambitions. As a Marshall Scholar, he aims to obtain a Ph.D. in Musicology and become a professor of music at a public institution, fostering enduring relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
