Skipping a Splash: Saxony-Anhalt's Unused Swimming Vouchers for Kids Post-Corona

Limited usage of pool discounts has been observed thus far. - Minimal Swimming Passes Have Yet to Be Used in High Numbers

Let's dive into the ... ahem ... shallows of the swimming voucher situation in Saxony-Anhalt. After handing out approximately 8,000 vouchers to help kids catch up on missed swimming lessons due to the Coronavirus pandemic, only a fraction have been claimed. According to the State School Office in Halle, just 1,037 vouchers were used by April this year.

The Ministry of Education is extending the program's expiration date until 30 November 2026 and is planning to distribute more vouchers. But here's the kicker: the pool times are a roadblock.

A spokeswoman for the State School Office commented, "We assume there's a significant interest from parents to use the vouchers, but it's the scarcity of water times available across regions that's hindering use, causing kids to end up on waiting lists for swimming opportunities."

The vouchers are specifically issued to kids who can't swim or swim safely, based on the assessment of local swimming instructors. Each voucher, valued between 100-150 euros, can only be redeemed with institutions authorized to administer examinations per the German Swimming Examination Regulations.

The Corona pandemic isn't the sole culprit behind kids entering school without much swimming experience. Schools face challenges when trying to impart the necessary swimming skills within the regular curriculum.

As for the vouchers' distribution, the State School Office hasn't offered specific data about areas where vouchers are used more or less frequently. The spokeswoman explained, "From experience, the vouchers are used more in major cities. This is due to the presence and better accessibility of swimming pools, but free water times must be available, too. Also, it's crucial that there are qualified course providers nearby where the vouchers can be redeemed and where examinations can be taken."
