Writing mentor David Farland's shocking passing this month leaves an unfathomable void; grappling with this loss feels like a denial I can't shake off.

Mentor's Demise: A Pivotal Phase in the Epic Quest

In the midst of personal turmoil, I find myself adrift, much like poor old Luke Skywalker when good ol' Obi-Wan took his final breath. Dave, my esteemed mentor, skedaddled this month, and it's left me feeling hollow. It's all bloody tough to wrap my head around, man.

One fella in my mentoring group hit the nail on the head when he said it's like being Luke, left stunned after Darth Vader's cruel beheading of Obi-Wan. But I reckon there's more to it than just that. I've never given much thought to what came next for the wannabe Jedi, sat mourning on that holo-chess board. I mean, we as the audience knew Luke would work through it and find another path to the Force, 'cause that's how these tales go.

But real life? That's a different beast altogether, ain't it?

Since Dave lit out of here, I've been struck by a sense of disorientation, loss, and goddamn desperation. His wisdom and guidance had such an impact on me that it's hard to imagine slaying the publishing dragon without his handy guidance. I mean, how the hell am I supposed to succeed on my own, now that he's six feet underground?

I can't help but think if I'd known Dave had just seven more months to grace this Earth, I'd've clung to every word he spouted instead of abandoning my mentoring group to focus on schoolwork. But that's just the lamentations of a fool, ain't it?

Now I'm grappling with this feelings, trying to make sense of it all. I ain't gonna quit writing, no way, no how. But this feeling of being lost at sea ain't going anywhere either, so I gotta find a way to deal with it.

When looking for answers, I found myself dwelling on my favorite stories and how their heroes wrestled with similar feelings before becoming legends. Aragorn's journey after Gandalf's demise hit me the hardest, I swear.

When Gandalf bit the dust, Aragorn stepped up and took charge, guiding the Fellowship towards Lothlorien with grim determination. And y'know what? Gandalf had put them on that path, even in his absence. Just as Dumbledore left Voldemort's demise to Harry, Obi-Wan left the Death Star's destruction to Luke, and Cinna left the Capitol's downfall to Katniss.

Dave set me on the road to publication, and I got a bloody long way to go, friend. I ain't got a clue what lies ahead, no sir, but I know Dave would've been proud of me if he'd seen where I ended up. I wish to Christ he had stuck around to watch it go down.

Thanks for everything you gave me, Dave. Here's to swimming through these turbulent waters until I find what lies beyond.
