Macron Warns: War Returns to Europe, Democracy Threatened
French President Emmanuel Macron has sounded the alarm on the state of democracy in Europe. Speaking at the German reunification anniversary, Macron emphasized the need to prioritize science, knowledge, culture, and education to safeguard democratic order. He also warned of threats from within and without, including the return of conflict to Europe and the degeneration of public debate.
Macron noted that Europe is forming as a military power for the first time, with around 30 nations, including many EU countries, forming a coalition to improve military capabilities and support Ukraine. The EU has also launched a major 'ReArm Europe Plan/Readiness 2030', mobilizing 800 billion euros to strengthen defense capabilities. This comes as Macron warned that conflict has returned to Europe, citing the attack on Ukraine and hybrid forms of conflict.
Macron expressed concern that democracy in Europe is threatened from within. He noted that public debate has degenerated into hateful, violent arguments fueled by social media. He also warned that if Europeans don't reclaim control of their democracy, those manipulating the system will win within a decade.
Macron pledged to defend democracy in Europe, invoking the friendship between France and Germany and stating that the war between them is over. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing science, knowledge, culture, and education to safeguard democratic order. With threats from both within and without, Macron's words serve as a stark reminder of the challenges facing European democracy today.
