Stepping into a world where political themes are becoming more prevalent, even in young children's lives, parents often face the daunting task of explaining complex topics to their kids, like the workings of democracy. Luckily, the new kid's book "Who Calls the Shots on Our Farm?" by author Ruprecht Polenz offers engaging assistance. The book benefits from Polenz's extensive experience in political matters and his unique ability to depict the world through children's eyes.

Once upon a time, farmer Günter Schulze-Diekamp passed away, but his animals didn't really seem to care. Apparently, Schulze-Diekamp was quite a tyrant, and now that he's gone, the animals are enjoying their newfound freedom. However, freedom for these critters turns sour when stronger animals start using their power to bully the weaker ones away from the pasture and watering hole. This farm with its chaotic power struggles sounds scarily familiar—it's almost like a reenactment of George Orwell's classic dystopian novel "Animal Farm." Fortunately, a former Animal Farm resident, the wise donkey Benjamin, lives nearby Schulze-Diekamp's farm.

Two young farm inhabitants, Kimmi the lamb and Joscha the young farm dog, sense something is off on their farm and seek Benjamin's advice. But the old donkey isn't exactly in the mood for reminiscing about his time on Animal Farm, where he experienced the harsh realities of a pig-led dictatorship. With some persuasion, the young duo convinces Benjamin to share insights into peaceful coexistence, and they all head to Schulze-Diekamp's farm together.

"Who Calls the Shots on Our Farm?" is a fun exploration of the question of how democratic societies function, distribute power, and maintain control. The tale ends much more harmoniously than in Orwell's version, offering younger readers friendly characters, Kimmi and Joscha, to guide them through the story. The book is beautifully illustrated by up-and-coming design student Sidney von Veh.

Ruprecht Polenz, the author, is no stranger to politics. At the ripe age of 79, he is considered a seasoned influencer in the political realm after a distinguished career that included stints as the general secretary of the CDU. His fanbase extends beyond conservatives, with many admirers appreciating his defense of green politics during the traffic light government. Polenz's writing style reflects his experience in explaining complex connections to children, making "Who Calls the Shots on Our Farm?" both lovable and informative for young readers and, let's be honest, grown-ups too.
