"Let's jump right into it"
In the district of Adjumani, Northern Uganda, Akoy, a South Sudanese refugee, has found a new home and a purpose at the Ayilo 2A Elementary School. Akoy, who hails from the state of Jonglei and is Dinka, shares a common language with many of the children at the school, making him an invaluable asset.
Akoy began teaching at the Ayilo 2A Elementary School shortly after arriving in Uganda. His journey to Adjumani was marked by displacement, but he found solace in the classroom, imparting knowledge to the children with a spark of hope that resonates throughout the school.
The Ayilo 2A Elementary School, a 'school under the tree' in the absence of a school building, has been equipped with funds provided by Welthungerhilfe in cooperation with the Höller Stiftung. The school boasts nice classrooms and teachers' residences, some of which are occupied by Akoy and his fellow teachers, who live in the settlement, while others commute from out of town.
Akoy and his family live in a small, round hut in the settlement, while teachers from out of town reside in small houses behind the school. Despite the challenges that come with teaching in a makeshift school, Akoy expresses a desire for more space for the teachers, recognising the importance of a conducive learning environment.
The classes at the Ayilo 2A Elementary School are currently very large, with 150 children per classroom due to recent arrivals. However, Akoy's strength and pride continue to inspire the children, fostering an atmosphere of resilience and determination.
Over 200,000 South Sudanese refugees are living in the district of Adjumani, mainly women and children. The Ugandan government's policy of settling refugees quickly rather than making them live in camps allows individuals like Akoy to integrate into the community and contribute to the education of the next generation.
