Leipzig Welcomes 6,000 First-Graders as City Plans Smaller Classes by 2025
Today marks the start of a new school year in Leipzig and its surrounding districts. Around 6,000 first-graders, including 2,800 in the Leipzig district and 2,000 in Nordsachsen, are beginning their educational journey. Looking ahead to 2025, the Leipzig City School Authority (Städtisches Schulamt Leipzig) plans to reduce classroom sizes due to slightly smaller birth cohorts.
The regional school authority has reported a slight increase in the number of first-graders currently, with the number in Leipzig remaining roughly the same as last year. This year, 2,800 students are starting school in the Leipzig district, with 2,000 in Nordsachsen. From 2025 onwards, classroom sizes in Leipzig are expected to decrease, benefiting both students and educators.
Today's start of the school year sees a significant number of first-graders across Leipzig and its districts. Looking forward, the Leipzig City School Authority's plans to reduce classroom sizes from 2025 promise a more manageable class dojo for both students and teachers.
