Fifty years ago, Lehigh University welcomed its first class of female undergraduate students, a groundbreaking moment in the university's history. Among these trailblazers was Ann (Schmoyer) Story '75, who made history as the first female commissioned into the United States military from Lehigh.

Story was not only a member of the women's varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams, but she also excelled in intramural sports, playing for the softball and powder-puff football teams. Her athletic prowess extended to the court, where she served as one of the first co-captains of the women's tennis and volleyball teams.

Another notable figure from the Class of 1975 was Karen Stuckey '75 '10P. In addition to her involvement in sports, Stuckey forged her own path in extracurricular activities, serving as class treasurer and going on to become the first female president of the Lehigh Alumni Association.

The Class of 1975, which consisted of 169 women, marked a significant transition for the university. One of the ways they found community was through athletics, particularly through the annual women's powder-puff football games against Lafayette students. These games were played from 1971 through 1979, and also in 1981 and 1984.

Story felt supported and accepted as the first female commander in the ROTC program. She went on to become the first female cadet to enroll in and complete the four-year ROTC program at Lehigh, serving as the first female commander of the Air Force ROTC's Arnold Air Society. However, the name of the woman who held this position before her remains undocumented in available sources.

During Reunion Weekend held on June 12-15, the Class of 1975 came together to celebrate this milestone. Story, along with nine other members of her class, processed into Lehigh's 2025 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony, marking a full circle moment for these pioneering women.

The internet has made it easier for alumni to connect and stay in touch between Reunions, ensuring that the spirit of camaraderie and support continues to thrive among Lehigh's graduates. As we look back on the achievements of the Class of 1975, we are reminded of the impact that one generation can have on shaping the future of our university.
