Layers Along the Coast, Featuring Deborah Campbell
Deborah Campbell, a mixed media/textile artist based in Kilmacolm, West of Scotland, is offering an online workshop named 'Coastal Layers'. This project aims to help participants find new creative purposes for neglected or recycled fabrics and teaches various techniques and processes used in Deborah's textile work.
The workshop consists of 10 videos and 10 worksheets, totaling 2.45 hours. Participants will learn how to make a gel plate, create printing blocks, and combine these with gel printing. They will also experiment with layering and tearing fabrics, look at composition through collage, and construct their textile art using free motion machine embroidery as a drawing tool.
One of the highlights of the workshop is the teaching of methods to print soft coastal textures onto various weights of fabric, including sheers. This technique, combined with the layering and tearing of fabrics, helps build depth of color and pattern, creating unique textile artworks inspired by the natural environment.
Hand embroidery methods are also applied as expressive mark making on the textile layers. Participants will add embellishments and mark making through hand embroidery, further enhancing their creations. The workshop encourages participants to use recycled fabrics and find new creative purposes for them.
Deborah Campbell's textile artwork is inspired by Scotland's Coastal Landscape and Birdlife. Her strong influence from the coast is evident in the workshop, as participants are guided to observe and experiment with the natural world to shape their artwork.
The materials needed for the workshop include Gelatine & Glycerine, Soft Cut Lino and Cutting Tool, Acrylics or Fabric paints, Roller, Variety of recycled fabrics, Light fabrics (like organza), Backing fabric (like felt), Bonda web or pins, Sewing machine set up for free motion embroidery and machine threads, Darning needle and embroidery threads.
The 'Coastal Layers' workshop is led by Deborah Campbell, who trained in Printed Textiles at Glasgow School of Art. The cost of the project is approximately £80 ($109*). Deborah encourages experimentation and exploration to build creativity confidence, and the project aims to help participants develop their skills and create their own unique coastal landscape-inspired textile art piece.
