Law Enforcement Training: Threat Simulation Exercises at School in Ratekau
On September 13, 2025, a significant threat scenario training took place at the César Klein School in Ratekau, involving over 500 participants. The training was a collaborative effort between the Lübeck Police Directorate, Ostholstein police, Schleswig-Holstein State Criminal Police Office, Holstein rescue service, local police, fire department, emergency medical services, and the school administration.
The exercise, designed to strengthen operational competence and confidence, consisted of two threat scenarios developed in a real school setting. The morning session focused on handling an initial amok alarm, while the afternoon session involved overpowering an armed perpetrator who allegedly injured several people.
Teachers and staff of the school, along with actors with fictional injuries, contributed to a realistic exercise scenario. The participants experienced psychological and emotional pressure as they were required to make critical decisions for themselves and the fictional students.
Bernd Olbrich, director of the police directorate of Lübeck, acknowledged the exceptional commitment of all participants. He praised the cooperation between the police and the rescue service, with the handover of injured persons from the police to the secured area for further treatment being a part of the exercise.
Important investigations by the criminal police were taking place at the scene of the exercise, while communication and interfaces between the uniformed police, criminal police, special forces, rescue service, and school staff were crucial. The training was closely accompanied by coaches, deployment trainers, observers, referees, and supervisors.
Approximately 100 students, played by trainees and students of the police directorate, participated in the exercise. Voluntary participation of individual teachers and staff of the César Klein School was encouraged.
The authorities and institutions involved in the training exercise at César Klein School in Ratekau on September 13, 2025, emphasized the importance of such exercises in preparing for potential emergencies. Appropriate support was provided for teachers and staff during and after the exercise.
An analysis and evaluation of the exercise experiences and results will take place in the coming weeks. For any inquiries, please contact the Polizeidirektion Lübeck Press Office - Ulli Fritz Gerlach - Press Spokesperson - [email protected].
