Krefeld Zoo's New 'ArtenschutzZentrum' Opens in 2025: A Haven for Endangered Primates
Five years after the devastating fire that claimed many lives, including that of Massa, the silverback gorilla, Krefeld Zoo is set to open a groundbreaking facility. The 'ArtenschutzZentrum', a 0.4-hectare plot dedicated to endangered species, will house a three-species warm house for gorillas, chimpanzees, and mangabeys in their new home in September 2025.
The project, scheduled for completion by 2030, will feature increased ceiling heights and natural ground enclosures. Dr. Stefanie Markowski, the zoo's director since 2024, underscores the importance of this centre for ex-situ species protection.
The city and zoo, driven by the tragedy of the 2020 fire, have pledged to continue their commitment to primate conservation. Around 4.5 million euros in donations have been received to support this cause. Plans are already underway for the second construction phase, which will include a warm house for orangutans and another primate species.
The opening of the 'ArtenschutzZentrum' in 2025 marks a significant step in Krefeld Zoo's mission to protect endangered species. This state-of-the-art facility, along with the planned expansions, will not only enhance the living conditions of the primates but also contribute to their conservation efforts in their new homes.
