Karachi's Initial Science Writing Workshop Aims to Reshape the General Public's Perspective on Science
In the heart of Karachi, under challenging conditions due to flooded roads and expected rain, an extraordinary event took place. The 1st Science Writing Workshop in Karachi was organized by our leading science magazine in Pakistan, Pakistan, on September 12-13 at Habib University.
The organizing team, primarily made up of students and young professionals, remained determined and enthusiastic, successfully overcoming each barrier to make it a reality. Led by Saadeqa Khan, the founder, CEO, & Editor-in-Chief of Pakistan, the team ensured that the event was a resounding success. Saadeqa is a member of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network (Second Cohort) and NASW, a fellow of NPF Washington, The Falling Walls Foundation, and the Science Journalism Forum, and has won several international journalism grants and awards.
The workshop featured a variety of sessions, including training sessions, keynote speeches, virtual lectures, and panel discussions. Renowned journalists and trainers, such as Aleezah Fatima Hashmi, Sheema Siddiqui, Suhail Yusuf, and Ms. Rizwana Naseem, led the training sessions. The panel discussion was a thought-provoking exploration of the theme "Open Science & Accessibility", featuring four diverse people from science and interdisciplinary backgrounds.
The event was sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery - Women (ACM-W) as part of their "Celebrating Women in Computing" initiative. Tahira Nasir, an active participant, commended the entire team for organizing a successful and impactful workshop. A participant associated with a prominent public research organization, Ameen, expressed excitement about the event's organization and anticipates it becoming a regular annual or biennial activity.
Several participants articulated interest in collaborating with Pakistan for future events. The workshop also attracted a large number of students from Habib University and outsiders. The teams are eager to organize more events like this in the coming months.
Tahira also expressed her appreciation for the ACM for sponsoring the event. ACM is the world's largest educational and scientific computing society. The workshop featured virtual sessions with esteemed figures such as Mr. Ehsan Masood, Dr. Alex Dainis, Dr. Salman Hameed, Dr. Faisal Ur Rehman, and Syed Fawwad Raza.
