Israeli Filmmaker Eran Riklis Seeks European Partners for €1.5M TV Drama

Israeli filmmaker Eran Riklis is set to compete for a significant award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. His upcoming TV drama, 'The Abduction of Yossele Schumacher', is in the running for the Council of Europe Series Co-Production Development Award, worth €50,000 ($58,700). Riklis is also seeking European partners for co-production, with an estimated budget of €1.5 million ($1.7 million) per episode.

The drama, commissioned by Israeli channel Keshet 12, is a six-part thriller based on the true case of the abduction of a seven-year-old Jewish boy in the 1960s. The incident sparked a fierce conflict between the Israeli Mossad and the ultra-Orthodox community. Riklis, who is producing the drama with his own shingle and Moshe Edery of United King Films, is eager to find partners in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Poland during his visit to Tallinn's TV Beats, Co-Financing Market.

Riklis' involvement in the project comes amidst political tension. Nearly 4,000 entertainment industry names have boycotted Israeli film institutions, viewing them as 'complicit in war crimes' in Gaza. Despite these sentiments, Riklis hopes they won't impact the production of his drama.

Riklis' 'The Abduction of Yossele Schumacher' is a promising project with a substantial budget and international interest. Its success at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival could pave the way for European co-production, despite the political climate.
