IRCC Expands Express Entry Options for Healthcare, Social Service Workers
On 27 February, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced significant changes to Express Entry categories. These updates aim to address labour shortages and improve the immigration process for certain occupations.
Among the key changes, IRCC updated the eligibility criteria for the healthcare and social services category. Now, applicants must have at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience in a single, category-eligible occupation within the last three years. This modification is set to facilitate immigration for health and social service workers, helping to fill sector-specific labour gaps.
The update also saw the creation of a new 'Education' category and the removal of another. Notably, pharmacists, social workers, and dental hygienists can now qualify for category-based draws in Express Entry. These changes expand the pool of eligible candidates and increase the chances of receiving Canadian permanent residence (PR) for those with lower Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores.
Express Entry draws can be general, provincial nominee program, program-specific, or category-specific. Category-based selection can be less competitive, as only candidates who meet the specific criteria are invited. This year, IRCC has announced six Express Entry categories, including healthcare and social services occupations.
The recent changes to Express Entry categories reflect Canada's ongoing efforts to address labour market needs and streamline the immigration process. By updating eligibility criteria and creating new categories, IRCC aims to attract more skilled workers to fill crucial roles in the healthcare and social services sectors.
