Interview Strategies Discussed with Marsh Insurance Executive
On Thursday, 15th May, Sandeep and Fiona from Marsh Insurance in Leeds visited a college to deliver an employability session to Level 2 Business students. The session was not just part of the students' course, but also a tool for their future career growth.
Marsh Insurance, a local insurance broker specializing in risk management for businesses, provided the students with essential skills that would serve them well in their professional lives. The session was designed to support the students' career development, making it a significant resource for their future career success.
The session began with an emphasis on understanding the employer. Before the interview, students were advised to research the company or organization to tailor their answers, show genuine interest, and align their goals with the employer's.
Students were then taught common interview questions they might be asked, such as "Tell me about yourself," "What do you know about our company?" and "What interests you about this job?" They were encouraged to practice answering these questions out loud, highlighting accomplishments, skills, and how they manage responsibilities.
When answering behavioral questions, students were advised to use the STAR method. This method involves describing the Situation, Task, Action, and Result clearly and specifically, using "I" statements to emphasize their individual contributions.
Other key strategies discussed included dressing appropriately for the interview, practicing with feedback, preparing a personal pitch, and managing interview logistics and follow-up. The session concluded with the importance of being punctual, polite, and following up with a thank-you note after the interview to reinforce interest and professionalism.
The session was part of a broader strategy to equip students with necessary career skills. The skills learned were considered essential for the students' future careers, as the session was not limited to academic growth but also focused on career advancement.
By combining thorough preparation, practice, and confidence-building techniques, students can effectively navigate typical interview questions and make a strong impression. This approach is supported by career centers and expert advice, emphasizing that interviewing is a skill improved through repetition and thoughtful preparation.
