Thursday Event: Remarque Peace Prize for International Law Expert Philippe Sands

Get ready for an award ceremony next Thursday, as the city of Osnabrück is set to honor British-French jurist and author Philippe Sands with the Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Prize. This prize, valued at 25,000 euros, is a testament to Sands' significant contributions to international law and peace.

Sands, a professor of law at University College London and a visiting professor at Harvard, is no stranger to the international stage. He practices law before The Hague-based International Court of Justice and other international courts. His story, along with his latest book "Return to Lemberg", tells a poignant tale of his grandfather's escape from Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938, and the development of the legal concepts of "genocide" and "crimes against humanity".

Osnabrück's Mayor, Katharina Pötter (CDU), acknowledges Sands' work as a timely reminder of the importance of international law in our globalized world, serving as a beacon for right and wrong behavior.

This year, the special prize of 5,000 euros goes to the "Trialog" project by Jouanna Hassoun and Shai Hoffmann. Following the Hamas terrorist militia's attack on Israel in 2023, they have been visiting schools across Germany to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their Jewish-Israeli and Muslim-Palestinian backgrounds make them uniquely positioned to address the emotional challenges this conflict presents.

The Erich-Maria-Remarque Peace Prize, a tribute to the renowned German author of All Quiet on the Western Front, has been awarded by Osnabrück every two years since 1991. This year marks the 17th ceremony of this prestigious award.
