Unexpected Payments in Your PayPal Account? Here's What to Do — Cautiously

Info: Secret Funds Inflow Detected

Ever received an unexpected payment on your PayPal account? That's usually a good thing, right? But if you don't recognize the sender, it might just be the start of a scam. Consumer centers in NRW and Rhineland-Palatinate have issued a warning about a new PayPal scam.

Here's the scam lowdown: Scammers accidentally send money to your PayPal account and then quickly ask you for a refund via "Friends and Family." If you oblige, you won't be able to get your money back due to the transaction mode. The scammers, however, will open a dispute over the alleged accidental payment made through the "Goods and Services" transaction mode and demand their money back. PayPal will oblige, taking the amount from your account. So, the scammers get their cash back, and you're left empty-handed.

Scam Alert: Keep That Money Where It Belongs

To avoid this scam, the consumer centers advise a simple solution: initiate the refund using the original transaction instead of creating a new one. In your PayPal account, you can do this by opening the payment sent by the alleged scammers and sending the amount back using "Send Refund" in the app or "Refund this amount" on the browser.

Fraudsters Cashing In on Payment Services

Protect yourself by staying informed and being cautious. Scammers are always on the lookout for new ways to separate you from your hard-earned cash.

  • Consumers: To avoid scams, regularly check your PayPal account for any unusual activity and make sure to use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication (2FA).
  • Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on the latest scam tactics and best practices for protecting your online accounts.
  • Beware of Phishing Attempts: Never click on links or call numbers within suspicious emails. Instead, contact PayPal customer service through the official website and never respond to urgent requests demanding immediate action.
  • Verify Transactions: If you're unsure about an unexpected payment, log into your PayPal account directly through the official PayPal website to check if the transaction is legitimate.

Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don't let your guard down and keep your hard-earned cash in your pocket.
