A Father-Son Duo on a Carpentry and Business Journey
Sigurður Brynjar Pálsson and Sölvi Steinn Sigurðsson, father and son, have embarked on an intriguing adventure together—mastering the craft of carpentry during their evenings at FB's school. Their upcoming summer project? Building a guest house at the family's summerhouse.
The CEO Carpenter
"I've always been drawn to working with my hands and being creative, creating things. With my background in construction and my current role as the CEO of BYKO, it's a breath of fresh air to trade my corporate vest for a carpenter's one when I'm at the family's summerhouse," says Sigurður.
The Business-minded Carpenter
Sölvi, at 21, is pursuing a business degree at the University of Iceland. Sharing his father's passion for hands-on work, it was a spur-of-the-moment decision to join him in the carpentry classes. "I still see it as quality time with my dad. Education is always a good thing," Sölvi reasons.
Balancing Act
"It's a fantastic blend, stepping away from books to get physical. It can be a little stressful to juggle both, but being organized and optimistic helps," Sölvi admits.
The pair discover they have a fruitful dynamic in class, with Sigurður frequently turning to Sölvi for a second opinion on assignments and exchanging ideas for mutual solutions. "It's been a rewarding experience learning together," Sigurður smiles.
New Perspectives
According to Sigurður, the coursework has been rewarding but challenging, particularly mastering three-dimensional thinking. "The drawing courses, in particular, have been challenging but have broadened my perspective on buildings significantly," he says.
For Sölvi, the most surprising aspect was the diversity of the field. "The course is suitable for everyone, regardless of experience or knowledge. It has been an enlightening experience, offering a new skillset that I believe will be beneficial in the future," he remarks.
In the fall of 2023, they are set to graduate. Sigurður plans to complete his bachelor's degree and potentially advance to a master's program. He believes the education will enhance his understanding of BYKO clients' challenges and greatly benefit him in his current role. In his personal life, the newfound skills will enable him to take on home maintenance projects with confidence.
Life-Long Learners
"Regardless of the topic, lifelong learning is always advantageous. This carpentry education will be undeniably beneficial for me in my work. By understanding the complexities of construction projects, I can better support our clients in their endeavors. Personally, the chance to put my newly gained skills into practice will be exciting, make home maintenance much smoother," Sigurður shares.
Sölvi is similarly enthusiastic about his carpentry studies' long-term benefits, whether they be in his future career or in building his own dream home in the future. "Our journey as 'Fathers on Tour' might turn into reality one day, and having a business degree on my resume certainly won't hurt," he laughs.
