Hindustan Zinc to receive $46 million investment from India's GreenLine for electric truck fleet expansion.
China's Ant Group Pledges $275 Million for Green Trucks, Hindustan Zinc Partners with GreenLine Mobility Solutions
In a move to combat climate change, China's Ant Group has pledged $275 million to accelerate the decarbonization of heavy trucks. However, this pledge does not involve the setting up of a commercial-scale battery-swapping infrastructure, nor does it involve any exit from India's Paytm or Hindustan Zinc's 2050 net-zero carbon emission goal.
Meanwhile, India's GreenLine Mobility Solutions is rapidly expanding its fleet of clean trucks. Currently operating over 650 LNG-powered trucks, the company aims to grow to more than 10,000 vehicles in the near future. GreenLine will use funds from an investment of ₹50 billion (~$600 million) to deploy 5,000 LNG trucks by the fiscal year ending March 2025.
Hindustan Zinc, on the other hand, has partnered with GreenLine Mobility Solutions in a ₹400 crore (~$46 million) deal. This partnership will see Hindustan Zinc deploy 100 electric trucks (EVs) to replace diesel vehicles for inter-unit concentrate transport and install commercial-scale battery swapping infrastructure with three high-capacity stations. Concurrently, GreenLine will supply 100 LNG trucks to double Hindustan Zinc's existing low-carbon fleet for long-haul transportation of finished goods.
This initiative is expected to reduce approximately 236 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions per month (equivalent to planting around 12,000 trees) and lower about 150,000 tonnes of Scope 3 emissions annually. This will advance Hindustan Zinc's 2050 net-zero commitment and support India’s green growth goals.
In summary, the collaboration between GreenLine and Hindustan Zinc represents a significant step in India’s transition toward sustainable heavy vehicle transportation with a focus on both electric and LNG-powered trucks. The investment will help double Hindustan Zinc's liquefied natural gas-powered truck fleet to 200 for long-haul finished goods transport, but it is not related to the pledge by China's Ant Group.
The investment of ₹50 billion (~$600 million) by GreenLine Mobility Solutions will be used for deploying 5,000 LNG trucks and supports the company's efforts to grow its fleet to more than 10,000 vehicles.
Hindustan Zinc, through a ₹400 crore (~$46 million) deal with GreenLine Mobility Solutions, plans to deploy 100 electric trucks and install three high-capacity battery-swapping stations for commercial use, furthering their commitment to reduce carbon emissions.
The partnership between GreenLine and Hindustan Zinc in the field of technology for sustainable transportation aligns with India's vision for green growth and contributes to the education-and-self-development conversation about the importance of eco-friendly transportation practices. In sports and general-news, this collaboration can be seen as a meaningful step towards a healthier planet, leveraging advanced technology for a greener lifestyle choice.
