Governor Newsom discusses the proposed assassination of Charlie Kirk, attributing a widespread sense of isolation among young people to an increasing "epidemic of loneliness".
Gavin Newsom Addresses Charlie Kirk's Assassination and Its Impact on Youth
California Governor Gavin Newsom made his first public remarks about the tragic assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, expressing his condolences and linking the event to an 'epidemic of loneliness' among young men.
While at Florin High School in south Sacramento, discussing a mentorship program for men and boys, Newsom shared that every young man at the event had heard of Kirk. The governor connected the crisis to the fatal shooting of Kirk, stating, 'We've lost another voice, another person who was trying to engage in conversation, and it's a tragic reminder of the divide that exists in our society.'
Newsom's connection to Kirk was through a March interview on his podcast. During the conversation, Newsom criticized fellow Democrats for not reaching out to young male voters as effectively as Kirk did. However, the response from Newsom's party to hosting Kirk on his podcast was mixed or muted.
The universal sentiment among the young men at the event was one of condemnation. They found it difficult to process Kirk's assassination, with one 13-year-old son of Newsom contacting him from school the day Kirk was shot, asking if he was alive.
In response to a question about whether his rhetoric would change in light of the assassination, Newsom stated that he would continue to speak truth to power and to engage in meaningful conversations with people of all political persuasions.
It's worth noting that Newsom's staff had stayed in contact with Kirk's staff up until recent weeks. However, no further events with Kirk's staff were mentioned by Newsom.
Meanwhile, former Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger spoke about the country's political divide, discussing inflammatory political rhetoric surrounding a proposition that Governor Newsom has recently used. Schwarzenegger emphasised the importance of finding common ground and working together to solve the issues facing our society.
As we continue to grapple with the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's assassination, it's clear that the need for meaningful dialogue and understanding among people of different political views is more important than ever. Governor Newsom's mentorship program for men and boys is a step in the right direction, aiming to address the 'epidemic of loneliness' and foster meaningful connections among young people.
