Foreign nationals continue to be eligible for admission to Harvard for the time being.
Harvard-Trump Standoff Over International Students: Federal Court Blocks Administration's Ban
In a significant victory for Harvard University, a federal judge has prohibited the U.S. government from barring the prestigious institution from admitting international students. The ongoing legal battle stems from the Trump administration's efforts to limit the number of foreign students admitted to U.S. universities.
During a hearing on Tuesday, Judge Allison D. Burroughs extended an initial preliminary injunction preventing the government from enforcing its ban on Harvard's international student admissions. The judge clarified that Harvard should continue admitting international students with valid visas, stating that she aiming to maintain the status quo.
Last week, Judge Burroughs decided that the government's order would cause "immediate and irreparable harm" to Harvard. The Trump administration had argued that universities like Harvard were not taking sufficient measures against pro-Palestinian protests and tolerating anti-Semitic incidents on campus.
Earlier, the government had granted Harvard a 30-day period to demonstrate compliance with all legal requirements and address any potential deficiencies. If Harvard could not provide proof of compliance, the administration intended to terminate the school's eligibility to admit new international students under a specific federal program. Enrolled foreign students would have to transfer to other universities to maintain their U.S. residence status.
International students make up nearly a quarter of Harvard's student body, with the majority coming from Asia. This ongoing controversy has raised concerns among these students, who fear they could be wrongfully imprisoned and deported due to the Trump administration's actions.
During Harvard's graduation ceremonies this year, concerns about the future of international students were bittersweet. President Alan Garber emphasized the global diversity of the graduating class in his commencement speech. Dr. Abraham Verghese, the invited speaker, alluded to the political climate, stating that America's acceptance of immigrants contributes significantly to the nation's greatness.
