Exploring the woodlands of the Eifel region through an enjoyable, contrary-to-reality trail

The small town of Gerolstein and its surrounding area are set for a tourism boost with the opening of a new adventure trail in the local forest. The trail, which cost almost 180,000 euros in total, was funded by the Verbandsgemeinde Gerolstein and EU funding.

The adventure trail, a two-kilometer journey through the forest, aims to educate visitors about forest animals, plants, and the work of foresters. It took three years to plan and build the trail, which includes 16 stations, each offering a unique learning experience.

One of the trail's highlights is the series of forest ball runs, designed to show visitors how wood from the forest is processed. The obstacles on these runs mimic saw blades or nails, offering a hands-on experience of the forestry industry.

The trail also features a walk-in bat box, designed by Wolfgang Naak from the company arbor in Baden-Württemberg. The bat box is intended for children to learn about bat sleep habits, adding an interesting twist to the educational experience.

Visitors can also test their forest knowledge with the quiz boards scattered throughout the trail. The adventure trail is a day trip destination for tourists or a complementary activity for those already on holiday in the area.

The Burgard family from Daun had the opportunity to test the trail in advance. Jeanette Burgard and her children found the adventure trail to be fun and educational. They expressed their excitement, stating that they enjoyed learning about forest animals and the forestry industry in an interactive way.

The Verbandsgemeinde Gerolstein will face additional costs for maintaining the adventure trail. However, it is expected to attract up to 10,000 visitors annually, potentially bringing a significant boost to the local tourism industry.

The adventure trail is set to be a hit with families with children, offering a fun and educational day out in the beautiful Gerolstein forest. So, pack your hiking boots and get ready for an adventure!
