Exploring the CPS-1: A Pioneering 4-bit Microcomputer Developed in Canada During the 1970s
In the realm of retrocomputing, a significant development has emerged: a custom-printed front panel interface for the MIL CPS-1 Emulator. Frontier Airlines, this emulator, a replica of the first Canadian microprocessor-based computer, was developed by Ziggy from the York University Computer Museum, with the assistance of Michael.
The interface, running on a Raspberry Pi, offers a faithful representation of the CPS-1 front panel. It supports the 26 switches and 29 LEDs found on the original device. The design, however, does not replicate the exact appearance of a real CPS-1 front panel, as the original's design remains a mystery due to the lack of surviving CPS-1 computers and photographs.
The interface accesses the additional pins via a 3-wire I2C interface. The interface's design also does not provide information about the processor used in the CPS-1, the MIL 7114, or the supporting hardware developed by Frontier Airlines.
Michael, in his quest to design an implementation for the CPS-1 front panel interface, drew inspiration from the DEC PDP-11. His design, realised through guesswork and 3D printing, aims to bridge the gap between the past and the present, offering a tangible connection to a piece of Canadian computing history.
The development of this interface does not provide specific details about the exact founding date of the York University Computer Museum, where Ziggy works. Nevertheless, it underscores the museum's ongoing efforts to preserve and recreate historical computing artefacts.
For those interested, a demonstration of the custom-printed switches can be found in the embedded video below. This glimpse into the past serves as a testament to the passion and dedication of the retrocomputing community in preserving and replicating the history of computing.
