Explore Minnette de Silva, the pioneering Sri Lankan modernist architect who made a significant impact in the field.
In the realm of modernist architecture, Minnette de Silva emerges as a pioneer, especially in the tropical island nation of Sri Lanka. A new book, "Minnette de Silva: Intersections," penned by Anooradha Iyer Siddiqi, explores the life and work of this remarkable architect.
De Silva's philosophy was grounded in harmonizing traditional and modern architecture. This was evident in her designs, which blended 1920s continental European modernist elements with organic materials and handcrafted elements by local artisans in Kandy.
Born into a Sinhalese-Burgher family, De Silva was active in the anticolonial and universal franchise movements. Her architectural journey began through a meeting with town planner Oliver Weerasinghe. She later studied in Mumbai under Mistri and Bhedwar, led by Perin Mistri, one of the first women in India to practice architecture.
After her studies were disrupted by her participation in the Quit India protests, which led to her expulsion, De Silva moved to London to enroll in the Architectural Association. Upon her return to Sri Lanka, she established her Studio of Modern Architecture in Kandy in 1947, marking her first commission.
De Silva's practice treated architecture as a lived experience and a contemporary expression of local traditions. She actively engaged engineers and fabricators during construction, even taking private classes in modern weaving practices to understand the work of craftspeople. Notable projects by De Silva include the Kandyan Art Association building in Kandy (1982-84) and the Ceylon Match Factory in Colombo (1958).
"Minnette de Silva: Intersections" is illustrated with new photography, drawings, and archival material, as well as detailed presentations of De Silva's significant projects. The book, which was researched with Methmini Kariyakarawana, an author, was published in 2024.
De Silva's pioneering philosophy continues to resonate with many young architects in the region, including those in neighboring India. Her decision to live in Kandy and introduce the work of local craftsmen into contemporary modern art continues to inspire architects today.
