Experienced Workshop with Steve Sandler: Deep Dive into Power Integrity

Sierra Circuits, in collaboration with Steve Sandler, the renowned 'Master of Power Integrity', recently organised the Hands-On Power Integrity Workshop at Levi's Stadium. The two-day event was a unique blend of lecture and hands-on exercises, providing attendees with a comprehensive understanding of power integrity.

The workshop primarily focused on key topics such as circuit grounding, power integrity, signal integrity, PCB stackups, power delivery systems, and switch mode power supplies. It delved deep into foundational concepts as well as advanced methodologies related to power and signal integrity design, power delivery systems design, and practical aspects of PCB design.

Steve Sandler, an industry expert, typically includes hands-on analysis and real-world examples focusing on power integrity issues in high-speed electronic designs and how to mitigate power noise and ensure reliable power distribution throughout the PCB. The sessions also often incorporate discussions on EMC (electromagnetic compatibility), thermal management, analog measurements, and the impact of PCB manufacturing processes on power integrity.

The workshop was not just about theory. It also covered high-fidelity measurement, design, and simulation techniques, offering practical tutorials on measurement techniques, design best practices for controlling power integrity, and analysis of complex power delivery challenges.

Heidi Barnes, another industry professional, was also involved in the collaboration between Sierra Circuits and Steve Sandler. The event included catered lunches during the workshop, and a tour of the facilities at Levi's Stadium was part of the programme.

This workshop, consistent with known industry training provided by Steve Sandler and Sierra Circuits, focused on practical, measurable results in power and signal integrity for complex PCB systems. It covered circuit grounding and PCB stackup design to optimize power integrity, signal integrity fundamentals related to power distribution systems, analysis and mitigation of power noise (ripple, switching noise, ground bounce), switch mode power supply effects on PCB power delivery, hands-on measurement techniques for power integrity verification, thermal and EMC considerations impacting power integrity, practical design and fabrication approaches for reliable power delivery networks on PCB, and the use of real-world examples and hands-on data from SI/PI measurement tools.

In summary, the Hands-On Power Integrity Workshop was a valuable opportunity for attendees to gain a deep understanding of power integrity, learn practical techniques for measurement, design, and simulation, and network with industry professionals.

  1. The Power Integrity Workshop, led by Steve Sandler and Sierra Circuits, combined technology with education-and-self-development, as it emphasized practical, measurable results in power and signal integrity for complex PCB systems.
  2. To enhance knowledge further, the workshop delved into hands-on analysis and real-world examples focusing on technology areas such as EMC (electromagnetic compatibility), thermal management, and the use of SI/PI measurement tools.
