EU Unveils New AI Strategy to Boost Digital Sovereignty
The European Union is set to unveil a new Artificial Intelligence strategy this Thursday, aiming to reduce its dependence on the US and China for AI technology and boost Europe's digital sovereignty.
Dubbed 'Apply AI Strategy', the initiative seeks to strengthen Europe's military capabilities by accelerating the development and use of AI-supported command and control systems. The EU Commission plans to allocate one billion euros from existing funding programs to implement these measures.
Public administrations are expected to play a key role in spreading these technologies, supporting the growth of European start-ups and helping reduce the EU's external dependencies in the AI stack. This move aims to mitigate risks from both state and non-state actors.
The strategy also focuses on promoting European AI news platforms and driving their use in critical sectors like healthcare, defense, and industry. It aims to understand AI as a 'strategic asset', integrating it deeply into the EU's institutional, industrial, and security structures.
The EU's new AI strategy, to be presented this Thursday, seeks to promote scalable and reusable generative AI solutions of European origin, with a focus on open-source systems. By doing so, the EU aims to enhance its technological independence and secure its future in the global AI landscape.
